the 2011 Orlowsky and Freed
Grant Recipients
Three American painters over the age of 45 win $10,000 each plus an exhibition
Provincetown, MA: Provincetown
Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is proud to announce the 2011 Lillian
Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation Grant recipients Joan Ryan of
East Boston, MA; Karen Cappotto of Provincetown, MA; and Deborah Martin
of Twentynine Palms, CA.
The recipients were each awarded $10,000 and a three person exhibition at PAAM in fall 2012.
There
were more than 250 applicants, hailing from 32 states and two
countries. Applicants ranged in age from 45 to 84, and were 59% female
and 41% male.
The late Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed were former students of Hans Hofmann who studied with him in both New York and Provincetown. They were very active at PAAM as artist members, instructors in the summer school, and they served on a variety of committees throughout their 50 years on Cape Cod. Lillian, in particular, was sensitive to the challenges artists face, especially those working against the mainstream or outside of popular schools of art. Her desire to provide financial support to mature artists through this generous endowment gift speaks to her passionate commitment to art for art's sake and art created regardless of the demands and whims of the marketplace.
