JOCK, an ambitious inaugural exhibition of recent & new work by Adrian Carroll, opens on October 26th At Patty DeLuca Gallery. In this new body of work Carroll expands his dialogue with the history of the male figure in fine art. Concepts such as athleticism, body worship & gender construction, find their way into new ideas in contemporary painting.
Carroll explores the idea of the “masculine” while investigating a distinction between the biological sex of the male being and the “dominant” gender distinction of the “feminine”. Carroll uses fictitious high school footballers, physically aggressive adolescent boys & highly sexualized & seductive Drag Queens & Tranny Hustler’s to create a phantasmagoric armature where the clastic construction of the “Heterosexual man” clashes with the QUEER superego.
Carroll’s works are not traditional paintings, as his materials consist of quixotic plastic polymers, reductionist resins & carefully produced alchemical mediums; confounding academic tradition while coexisting within classic art historical paint stuff. This new exhibition includes an interactive sculptural installation, where Carroll invites the public to become more than simply a “viewer” but rather an integral component in the binary of the installations political power suggesting the liberation of equal rights.
Carroll also introduces another uniquely contemporary experience in her new pictures: digital culture’s effect on painting and seeing. The somnambulist characters that inhabit Carroll’s work imitate a simulacrum between the artificiality of the cameras eye and the impurity between personal experience and the phenomenon of memories distortion.
Some of these pieces are infused with other more explicit references to the history of painting. In this body of work, one will sense a feeling of chiaroscuro inspired by the great masters of the Italian Baroque and High Renaissance, such as Titan and Caravaggio. A connection with the warm opacity, translucently & flourishing of vibrant color inspired by the styles of the French Impressionist painters, Claude Monet & Edgar Degas will surly be noticed. Wrenching the bolts together of these periods of influence with the pure debauchery and calculated “cool remove” of postmodernism, Carroll finds inspiration in artists such as Mike Kelly and Bjarne Melgaard. These conflicting master visions are cannibalized, regurgitated & amalgamated a new through a multi –layered pentimento of Carroll’s own creation. This conception provides the latticework toward a newly explored visual language.
Adrian Carroll graduated from The School Of The Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston, in cooperation with Tufts University & holds a Masters in Fine Art. Her work was presented in an exhibition entitled “ Traveling Scholars” at the Museum Of Fine Arts, Boston in 2003 & has shown in numerous exhibitions in New York City. Carroll lived and worked in Brooklyn New York for many years but now resides in Provincetown and continuously works in Massachusetts.

This is our first time showing his work in Ptown. Ming Jing is one of the best painters in China; he had his solo exhibition in China's National Art Museum a few years ago. Now he is the Chairman of the Art Department and a professor at HeBei University. We are so proud to have his firt solo show in Ptown.

Now he is the Chairman of the Art Department and a professor at HeBei University. We are so proud to have his firt solo show in Ptown.
Min Jing (b.1959), graduated from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts with a B.A. in 1983. Now he lives and teaches in China, his paintings have both the charm of ink painting and oils. He creates rhythms through tension and looseness with sensitive fine lines while brushing bold and textured strokes with strong gestures. He manipulates bright and dark, black and white, thickness and thinness, emptiness and fullness in a masterly way that looks effortles. One can sense his drifting lightness and also romantic and poetic or even humorous natures in his art, and wonder how he retains his purity and detachment in the contemporary world.

of the prominent, cooperative gallery (1977- 1998)

Historically, Long Point is important because of the reputation of its artists, its longevity, and its positive impact on the Provincetown art scene. It is particularly renowned for the harmony and camaraderie among its members.

Join the distinguished critic John Yau for a gallery
discussion
on Motherwell's work and life. John Yau is a poet, fiction writer,
critic, editor, and publisher of Black Square Editions, an award winning
press, which has published poetry, fiction, criticism, and
translations. His latest books include A Thing Among Things: The Art of Jasper Johns
(Distributed Art Publishers 2008), Egyptian Sonnets
(Rain Taxi, 2012), and Further Adventures in Monochrome
(Copper Canyon Press, 2012). After being the longtime Arts Editor for the Brooklyn Rail (2007- 2011), he left to start the online journal Hyperallergic Weekend, where he frequently posts his essays. Recently, he contributed an essay to
Robert Motherwell: Open (21 Publishing, 2010). He teaches at Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers University) and lives in New York.
This
year marks the 70th anniversary of Robert Motherwell's first visit to
Provincetown and the 50th anniversary of the creation of his Beside the Sea series, based on his experiences living and working overlooking Provincetown's bay and tidal flats.
In celebration of these milestones, PAAM will present the landmark exhibition, Robert Motherwell: Beside the Sea,
curated by Lise Motherwell and Daniel Ranalli; the exhibition features
rare work created by the artist in his Provincetown studio during the
summer of 1962 until his death in 1991. This is the first major
exhibition of Motherwell's work on Cape Cod and provides a
neverbefore-seen look at many pieces held in private collections.

Robert Callahan established himself as a leader in the world of miniatures early on in his career. Fashioning one inch scale reproductions of period furniture and accessories his work was featured in numerous publications including LIFE magazine. Recognized by collectors and museums for his precise detail, his work was added to many collections around the world. Roberts recent work pays homage to those early years by painting miniature landscapes of Cape Cod on antique ivory piano keys. Using scrimshaw, the traditional maritime art form, Robert creates fine details in the work. He then painstakingly watercolors the sky, seas and sands of the lower cape that he calls home. Each work is unique as the grain in the ivory reflects thru the paint. These miniature works of art draw the observer in to them to take a closer look, just as the Cape draws us to it.

is pleased to announce the fourth exhibition in our fifth season
featuring a duo show with recent paintings by Erik Laffer and Luanne
E Witkowski.
Thirty-year-old
Erik Laffer continues to amaze viewer with the colors and designs in
oil on canvas. Erik Laffer, the seventh of eight children, was born
in Smithtown, New York, in 1982. At the age of three, his family
moved to a small town in upstate New York, where he lived until he
was 14. The family moved again, to Delmar, a suburb of Albany, New
York, and Erik has been moving ever since.
“Given
my nomadic background, it’s almost natural that I’ve come to
express myself—rather look to shape my identity and better
understand myself—in maps. While my early landscapes and figurative
works were influenced by the rural environment I grew up in, as well
as the feelings of isolation I felt as a child with a learning
disability, the representational abstracts that make up my current
Cartography Series are not so much a study of emotion, as my earliest
works were, but more of a logical and experimental exploration of
where I’ve been, where I am now, and where I hope to be tomorrow.”
“My
goal with the Cartography paintings is to, as J.B. Harley writes,
“redescribe the world,” or at least the small world of Erik
Laffer. And just as there is a language of map making, there is style
and body of symbols in my paintings that define the landscape of each
work and identify my struggle to understand self, family, home, and
culture: boats, clocks, buildings, bridges, anatomy, arrows, and,
among many others, lines, color, and texture.”
Luanne
Witkowski’s art is strongly influenced by the shore and woodlands
of outer Cape Cod, Maine, and Nova Scotia. Her ‘research
sketchbook’ consists of documentary photography and video of
environmental installations Luanne creates as references for her
mixed and multi-media works in painting, photography, and video
projection. Prismatic refraction, reflection, projection and
mirroring/doubling are all used as strategies for creating a
perceptual and spiritual relationship with Place as locus for
recognition of and solace for the self. This traditional American
approach to the identification of the individual with landscape is
enlarged by a desire to discover and contact the particular
indwelling essence or energy of a particular place. The energy of
place is directly expressed in living ecosystems of plants and
animals. Growth and interdependent activity are found in an infinite
variety. The fragile systems of beauty and power that exist in the
natural world are accessible through the creative process of
perception and felt by us when we allow ourselves to relax and use
our five senses.
Working
intuitively to create abstract contemplative pieces that are rooted
in and extracted from landscape and experience, Luanne’s work is
process-driven, using traditional and nontraditional materials.
Luanne incorporates the very elements that influence and inspire
–clay, pigment, chemistry, technology– engaging her to embrace
the impact, to understand, to mingle the place in the piece and piece
in the place.

E Witkowski is a studio and environmental installation artist and
consultant
(Boston,
Wellfleet & Provincetown, MA) with works in collections
throughout the United
States
and abroad. She offers Basic Training Workshops for Artists and
Creative People publicly and produced large scale environmental
installations in Wellfleet & Provincetown MA; Deer Isle, ME; and
Ingonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Luanne
is the Communication Design Studio Manager at Massachusetts College
of Art and Design, a faculty member of the Critical & Creative
Thinking (CCT) graduate program at the University of Massachusetts,
Boston, and an internet entrepreneur and business owner. The artist
received a BFA from MassArt and an MA from the University
ofMassachusetts. In 2010 she received a Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Lifetime of Arts and Commercial Achievement Recognition.

Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is thrilled to present
an exhibition of work by Robert Motherwell this summer, July
20-September 30, 2012. Robert Motherwell: Beside the Sea,
curated by Lise Motherwell and Daniel Ranalli, will present rare work
created by the artist in his Provincetown studio during the summer of
1942.
2012 is a milestone year as it marks the 70th anniversary of the artist's first visit to Provincetown, Massachusetts and the 50th anniversary of the creation of his Beside the Sea series, based on his experiences living in the small outer Cape Cod town. This is the first major exhibition of Motherwell's work on Cape Cod and provides a never before-seen look at many pieces held in private collections.
The art of Robert Motherwell has national and international significance and is included in the collections of numerous national and international institutions as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY; The Art Institute of Chicago; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Centre Georges Pompidou, Musee National d'art Moderne in Paris, France; the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota; the Tate Modern in London, England; the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain; the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and numerous private collections.
Distinguished critic John Yau writes in his essay Beside the Sea: Robert Motherwell in Provincetown how Motherwell drew direct inspiration for this series from what he observed from his sea-side studio on Commercial Street in Provincetown. To illustrate, he points to a conversation Motherwell had with art historian H. H. Arnason:
"For years my summer studio has been directly on the bay in Provincetown on Cape Cod. There is a 900-foot tidal flat, and, just as one can play
ball games at low tide, at high tide the sea in a high wind breaks against
the
bulkhead in violent spray. In the Beside the Sea Series, I made the
painted spray with such physical force that the strong rag paper split,
and it was only when I found rag paper laminated with glue in five layers
that the surface could take the full force of my shoulder, arm, hand,
and brush without splitting. One might say that the true way to 'imitate'
nature is to employ its own processes."
PAAM will be offering several public programs to accompany this significant exhibition with lectures by Jack Flam, president of the Dedalus Foundation which was founded by Robert Motherwell to foster public understanding of modern art and Modernism; John Yau, art critic and author of the distinguished essay Beside the Sea: Robert Motherwell in Provincetown; and Catherine Mosley, artist and Motherwell's Master Printmaker from 1978-1991.
Exhibiting concurrently with the Motherwell show is Long Point: An Artists' Place, curated by Mary E. Abell and featuring the work of numerous artists from the legendary co-op gallery, including Motherwell himself who was one of the founders in 1977.
The opening reception for Robert Motherwell: Beside the Sea is Friday, July 20 from 8-10pm and is free and open to the public. This exhibition is on display from July 20-September 30, 2012.
